Gary is the talented artist who sculpted of the statue of James Longstreet and his horse, Hero.

Gary regaled the tour participants with stories about “Jimmy” Longstreet and the statue. He explained, for instance, that he designed the statue to be at eye level so that people could really see and touch the General — whereas on most equestrian statues one can only see “whether the horse is a mare or a stallion”.

Gary left Megan with a signed copy of his book, “It’s About Time; Sculpting of the General James Longstreet Memorial” (Four Winds Studio, 1984).

Readers can find out more about Gary on his web site, www.garycasteel.com.

Despite being a little chilly, October is the third busiest month of the year (after July and August) for Segway tours in Gettysburg. That’s because the tree colors are at their most spectacular at this time of year.

But this year we were treated with a color we don’t often see on the trees in October — white! Like many others in the Northeast, we were hit last weekend with a freak snowstorm. The ice and snow even caused some trees and electrical lines to fall, resulting in many road closures in the Park.

That's the 63rd Pennsylvania monument at the corner of Emmitsburg Road and Millerstown/Wheatfield Road.

It was the first time in anyone’s memory that we got snow in October and it made for some beautiful scenery but it didn’t last long. In fact, the snow is already gone and all Park roads are open again.

We regret that most of the tours were cancelled over the weekend but there are several weeks of the the tour season left so make your reservation now! Just come prepared for some brisk weather. If you don’t have some gloves, we even have some that you can borrow.

Bob is the one on the right :-)

We had a lot of fun and we saw many friends in the crowd. We’re told that the parade was the largest one in town for many years — if not the largest ever. By our count, the procession was about 25 blocks long which is great except that the parade route was only about 20 blocks long. So the beginning of the procession had finished well before the last one even left the staging area.

Our Segway demonstration was a big hit. Staff members Bob, Cathy, Sherry, Meghan, Chuck, Gary, and Jessie wowed the crowd and handed out candy to the children. According to today’s Gettysburg Times, we won third place in the costume category.

Here’s a short video of our group. Sadly, it was after 9pm and there was very little street lighting so we apologize for the low visibility.

An “Order of Battle” shows the organization and hierarchy of the army but you’ve never seen one like this before! It is a big graphic chart — sort of like a big family tree — and it is a great way to learn about the participants in the battle.

But it is so much more than a typical Order of Battle! The Graphical Order of Battle includes the commander of each army and that of each corps, division, brigade, and regiment, along with his rank and (when available) his photograph, headquarters staff, troop strength/losses, and artillery complement. Corps insignia and notable unit nicknames are also included. The names of participants are color-coded to distinguish those officers who were killed or mortally wounded (red), wounded (pink), and missing/captured (blue border) — and, in those cases, the chart shows the succession of command over the course of the 3-day battle.

All recipients of the Medal of Honor for action at Gettysburg are included, regardless of rank. (Commanders who received the Medal of Honor for service other than Gettysburg are also annotated.)

Finally, a citation is provided to the report of each commander/unit in the Official Records (ORs).

To the General Commanding;

According to our spies, the enemy is planning the largest incursion into this part of the country in almost a year. I am pleased to report our progress in defense of the Borough of Gettysburg from this threat of invasion by the Army of Tourists.

To date, we have destroyed the bridges and affected strategic road closures on at least four of the main arteries into town, deterring access from the south, west, and north.

Since the newspapers in enemy territory have detailed a plan to demonstrate to the southwest of this town in early July, we have taken all necessary steps to impede any further progress towards town by those unwelcome hordes by way of the Emmittsburg, Taneytown, or Fairfield roads.

Should the invaders flank our defensive lines and gain access to the town, they will find their movements severely restricted by additional barricades and road closures. Any enemy units that dare to hold a position in town in order to harass our merchants will have their wagons and other conveyances targeted by our sharpshooters who will make them pay for their poor judgment.

Residents and merchants of this town will naturally find their own movements and access to supply trains limited by these necessary actions in defense of the town. But they have been assured that we will lift many of the access restrictions later in the year, after the greatest threat of invasion has passed.
